Teenage Mental Health

Being a teenager can be hard. Sometimes, as adults, we forget how overwhelming life can be as a teen. Many teenagers have their mental health brushed off as "normal teenage hormones", but that may not always be the case and, at times, if ignored can lead to more serious conditions like anxiety and depression. Insight Psychiatry offers specialized teenage mental health care to patients aged 13 and older and can diagnose mental health disorders and then work with your family to develop a treatment plan that works specifically for your teen. Treatment may include psychotherapy, medication management, and communication directly with school staff or outside specialists. Book online for a diagnostic assessment.

TEENAGE YOUTH PROJECT

What is teenage mental health care?

Teenage mental health care with Insight Psychiatry focuses on treating teens struggling with mental health concerns. Providers can collaborate directly with teens, their families, and their schools to ensure their daily safety and well-being.

Dr. Brittany Wilson, DNP, PMHNP-BC specializes in creating a safe, welcoming environment for your teen to communicate their struggles, needs, and goals. She can help them find ways to cope with their symptoms or disorders in school and at home.

When should I seek out teenage mental health care?

Your family and teenager may benefit from mental health care if your teen suffers from:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Panic disorder or phobias
  • Addiction (behavioral or substance misuse)
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Bipolar or other mood disorders

Teens may also benefit if they’re experiencing immense stress, struggling in school or social situations, showing a loss of interest in favorite activities, or finding it difficult to focus.

What does teenage mental health care include?

Insight Psychiatry conducts a welcoming initial diagnostic assessment with both, the parent(s) and the teen. During the assessment, a review of histories, symptoms, and stressors will be discussed. You and your provider will then develop a treatment plan that will be tailored to you and your needs.

Your provider may encourage specific tests to help diagnose different disorders. The QbTest is a diagnostic tool and computer test useful for diagnosing ADHD. It gives providers feedback on impulsivity, reactions, and other ADHD symptoms. Your teen may be exempt if you have a previous psychiatric evaluation from a psychological provider diagnosing them with ADHD.

Insight Psychiatry does not perform autism spectrum disorder assessments. However, your provider can assist in referrals to outside specialists if deemed appropriate.

|PSYCHOTHERAPY|

Your teen may benefit from virtual or in-person supportive psychotherapy after school hours. Supportive therapy helps your child confidently communicate triggers, fears, and anxieties.

Your provider helps them develop healthy behavior and thought patterns and improve their social and relationship skills. Providers offer sessions one-on-one or with other family members.

|MEDICATION|

The practice can prescribe certain medications, depending on your teen’s condition. They also offer supportive medication management. This helps your teen create calendars, schedules, and charts to ensure they take medications on time and with the correct dosage. Insight Psychiatry takes a conservative approach to medication and teenagers. Your child will be monitored closely and started on the lowest doses, if it appears that medication is the appropriate next step.
